La Antigua Guatemala
Lodging and Venues
Because of its immense historical and cultural value, UNESCO declared La Antigua “World Heritage” in 1979. It is the third capital the Spaniards established after the flooding of the Valley of Almolonga on September 11 of 1541. It was founded on 1543 and in 1566 it was named City of Santiago de los Caballeros de Guatemala. After the earthquakes, floods and pest, the 1773 telluric movement ended up destroying it. To create a new capital, villagers gradually returned to give life to the city that today is one of the greatest tourist attractions of Guatemala due to its clear colonial architecture. A jewel of urbanism and colonial architecture that retains its properties as if time has stood still in them.
